Setting up your payment account
What to check on the payment provider鈥檚 form before you submit, including which industry to pick and the phone number switch.
Last updated
Before you can take orders, our payment provider (Stripe) needs to know who you are and where to send your money. It鈥檚 their form, and it takes a few minutes.
We start it with what you told us in your application: your business details, your address, what you make, and a website. Starting filled isn鈥檛 the same as being right, so read every box before you submit.
Check the details against your ID
The provider checks what you enter against official records. A mismatch doesn鈥檛 fail straight away. It comes back weeks later as a verification problem.
- Your name exactly as it appears on your passport or driving licence, not a nickname or a shortened first name.
- The address you live at now, even if your ID still shows an old one.
- For a limited company, the name and registered address as Companies House holds them.
Your website
The provider won鈥檛 let you continue without one. They need a page that opens for anyone and shows your business name and what you make. Your own site works, and so does a public social profile.
If you gave us a website in your application, it鈥檚 already in the box. If you didn鈥檛, we鈥檝e used your Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or Pinterest, in that order. If you gave us neither, the box is empty and you鈥檒l need to add one.
Three things won鈥檛 pass:
- Your Luma shop link. Your shop isn鈥檛 open to shoppers yet, so the provider would find nothing there.
- A private account. The provider can鈥檛 see inside it either.
- A page under construction or behind a password. It has to open for anyone.
Once your shop is live on Luma, you can switch the website to your shop link. It鈥檚 under Business information on your Payment account page.
Your industry
The form asks for your industry. It decides how card payments to you are classified, and the provider can change it if it doesn鈥檛 match what you sell. We leave it for you to pick, because it鈥檚 about what you make.
Look under Retail:
- Clothing and accessories for knitwear, bags, scarves and hats.
- Jewellery stores, watches, clocks, and silverware stores for jewellery. Not Precious stones and metals, watches and jewellery, even if you work in silver or gold: that one is for wholesalers selling to other businesses.
- Home goods and furniture for ceramics, candles, cushions and furniture.
- Beauty products for soap, skincare and bath products.
- Other merchandise for anything else, such as prints, cards and toys.
If you make more than one kind of thing, pick the one you sell most of. The search box at the top of the list finds an option by name, and you can change it later in the same place as your website.
Your statement descriptor
This is the name a shopper sees on their bank statement. We鈥檝e set it to your shop name in capitals, shortened if it鈥檚 long, so shoppers recognise the charge. If the form shows it, leave it as it is.
Your support phone number
The form asks for a support phone number, with a switch beneath it: Show phone number on receipts and invoices.
The provider files the number as contact information for your shoppers, and once it鈥檚 set it can鈥檛 be removed. With the switch on, it鈥檚 printed on the receipt for every order. Turn it off if you鈥檇 rather shoppers messaged you through Luma, which is where questions about an order come anyway.
It鈥檚 an easy box to fill in with your mobile without thinking. A separate business number is fine if you鈥檇 rather not.
